How Much Does a Manicurist Earn in the USA?

Manicurists and pedicurists work in various settings across the United States: from traditional salons and spas to home studios and mobile services (where the professional travels to the client’s home). To work legally in this field, you need to have a license issued by your state.

As of 2024, there are over 150,000 licensed manicurists in the USA. Earnings vary widely: some earn only $9-12 per hour, while others can make $50 per hour or more. So, why is there such a difference?

My Journey: From $10 to $100 Per Hour

When I first moved to the USA, I started with the lowest rate, just like most beginners—around $10 per hour. After gaining experience and building my client base, I now earn on average $100 per hour. How did I achieve this? Let’s break down the key factors that can help you maximize your income as well.

Key Factors That Influence a Manicurist’s Income

  • Working for Yourself or in a Salon
If you work in a salon, the typical income split is 60/40, where the salon takes 60% and you keep 40%. Even if you’re a skilled specialist, this model can limit your earnings, especially when you’re just starting—at most, you’ll make $25 per hour. Working for someone else isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, for most professionals, it’s a first step in their career. It offers stability and less stress, which is great for beginners or those who have just moved to the USA. But if your goal is to earn more, consider working for yourself. When you work for yourself, you set your own prices and keep a larger portion of your earnings.
  • Your Experience
When you’re starting out, it’s important to keep your rates modest. But as your skills and experience grow, feel free to raise your prices. If your work is of high quality, your client base will expand. At some point, your Instagram might say: “Currently not accepting new clients!” For example, when I first started, I charged $25 for a basic manicure. Today, I charge $140 for a basic gel manicure without any design. My regular clients often book appointments one or two months in advance. Fact: Building a loyal client base takes time. It took me six months to fully book my schedule with repeat clients.
  • Invest in Your Education
I strongly recommend investing in further training, especially from European masters whose techniques are highly sought after and often priced higher. If you’re interested in learning these techniques, check out my courses on European Manicure and Pedicure. I offer both private and group lessons that can help you improve your skills and take your career to the next level.
  • Work Speed
In this business, time is money. The faster you work, the more clients you can serve and the more you can earn. When I first started, I needed 2.5 hours for a classic manicure. Today, I can complete it in 1.5 hours—without sacrificing quality.
  • Location
Your rates directly depend on your location. If you’re working in an area with higher-income residents, you can charge more. It’s important to consider the cost of living and client expectations in the area.
  • Your Workspace
Your workspace must be professional, clean, and comfortable. If clients see that you’ve invested in creating a well-designed workspace, they’ll perceive you as a more valuable specialist. This can help you increase your rates.

  • Materials, Tools, and Equipment
Quality materials and tools are key to building a good reputation and ensuring the longevity of your work. I only use the best products, many of which you can find in my online store. Yes, these products may be more expensive, but they save you time, increase safety, and last longer.
  • Your Health
Taking care of your health is essential for a long and successful career. Don’t neglect proper lighting, comfortable working conditions, breaks, and adequate rest. If you’re not enjoying your work, it might be time to reassess your schedule or even consider a career change.

Growth Opportunities for Manicurists

If $50 per hour isn’t enough for you and you want more, here are a few growth opportunities to consider:

  • Opening your own studio
  • Opening a salon or a chain of salons
  • Creating a manicure academy
  • Becoming a beauty blogger or online instructor
  • Starting a store selling manicure products
  • Creating an online store for nail professionals

The opportunities are endless! If you have a dream, pursue it.

So, How Much Can a Manicurist Earn in the USA?

With the tips from this article, you can expect to earn at least $50 per hour. But if you continue to develop, invest in yourself, and implement a solid strategy, your earnings could be much higher. The most important thing is to enjoy your work and see your clients leaving with a smile. That is the real reward!

Don’t give up and remember: you are the one who decides how high you will rise!

If you want to raise your rates, don’t forget the importance of using professional tools and continuing education. To help with that, check out my online store and explore my European Manicure Courses. These will help you not only enhance your skills but also increase your income.
